Leads VS Harness:
As a dog owner I have purchased many leads and harnesses over the years for my pooches, I think it is important for you to find a lead or a harness that suits both your dog and you as this will ensure a happy relationship between your dog and its walks. Personally, I have found that when I’ve had puppies we have both benefitted from a harness, as this provides more comfort and security when out and about. Kipper is an angel when on a walk, he’s no trouble once he’s in his harness; Penny, on the other hand, is a handful and the harness lets me have just that little bit more control when she starts getting too excited.
Overall, I think that leads and harness’ are both fantastic ways of keeping your dog by your side on a walk, and their benefits are dependent on how they are used and if you are using the right ones for you and your dog. For instance, in my experience it is when my dog has learnt to walk nicely next to me that I can move from a harness to a lead, however some people may feel that the dog needs to adapt to the lead and will start their puppy on a lead once they have learnt recall.
Many dog owners use flexi leads as they have an extendable and retractable feature which allows the dog to venture further afield whilst still being tethered to the owner. I personally don’t use flexi leads and find them to be uncontrollable if extended too far. Therefore, owners should take care when using the flexi lead to not lose control in unsafe areas.
The harness’ that I would recommend and that both my dogs are currently styling the Julius K-9 brand. These are comfortable and secure; they also allow you to customize them through stick on labels.
