Lead VS Harness

The Grooming Shed, Dog Grooming in Cheshunt, HertfordshireLeads VS Harness:
As a dog owner I have purchased many leads and harnesses over the years for my pooches, I think it is important for you to find a lead or a harness that suits both your dog and you as this will ensure a happy relationship between your dog and its walks. Personally, I have found that when I’ve had puppies we have both benefitted from a harness, as this provides more comfort and security when out and about. Kipper is an angel when on a walk, he’s no trouble once he’s in his harness; Penny, on the other hand, is a handful and the harness lets me have just that little bit more control when she starts getting too excited.
Overall, I think that leads and harness’ are both fantastic ways of keeping your dog by your side on a walk, and their benefits are dependent on how they are used and if you are using the right ones for you and your dog. For instance, in my experience it is when my dog has learnt to walk nicely next to me that I can move from a harness to a lead, however some people may feel that the dog needs to adapt to the lead and will start their puppy on a lead once they have learnt recall.
Many dog owners use flexi leads as they have an extendable and retractable feature which allows the dog to venture further afield whilst still being tethered to the owner. I personally don’t use flexi leads and find them to be uncontrollable if extended too far. Therefore, owners should take care when using the flexi lead to not lose control in unsafe areas.
The harness’ that I would recommend and that both my dogs are currently styling the Julius K-9 brand. These are comfortable and secure; they also allow you to customize them through stick on labels.

Dog Friendly Parks In Cheshunt

Dog Friendly Parks In CheshuntOn my routinely morning walk at Cedars Park, I was thinking about how many great parks there are in Cheshunt which you can take your pooch to. Take Cedars Park for instance, it is a fantastic place for you to bring the dog and the family to; with its big fields and scenic lakes as well as its café and petting zoo, it caters to both beloved pets and children. It’s buggy friendly, with its gravel paths between the fields and picnic zones, so as to ensure that the whole family can be included and at ease. Penny and Kipper love this park as they are able to be free (off the lead) in the fields and interact with their furry friends safely.
If you are looking for a more one-on-one walk with your puppy then you can always take a leisurely long stroll around Cheshunt Park; it offers wide open fields and windy paths stretching the whole park as well as a few lakes dotted throughout the landscape. This will give you plenty of opportunities for new dog owners to practice recall with their puppies.
If your pooch is more energetic and in need of something challenging, then Lee Valley Country Park is the one for you. This park provides a range of agility based activities, from jumping hurdles to A-frames, your dog will have a wonderful time trying out new tricks and you are guaranteed to have a panting dog to take home by the end of your visit. You are still offered a variety of fields and lakes within this park for your dog to run themselves ragged in. Penny loves jumping the hurdles and showing off her speed over the A-frame, Kipper hasn’t quite mastered this skill yet.
All three of these parks are family friendly and are great for social networking for both you and your dog.
There are lots of tasty sticks that your dog can find in these parks, just be wary that these can become lodged in their throats if swallowed or chewed. It is recommended that when playing with your dog in the park you provide appropriate toys such as; tennis balls, rope toys etc. to prevent harm to your dog and create an enjoyable and relaxed walk.

Partners in Crime

Dog Grooming MaintenanceI have recently welcomed my gorgeous new cockapoo puppy Kipper in to my life, he is 4 months old now and has such character. There is never a dull moment, Kipper and Penny (my mums 12 month old cockapoo) are partners in crime.

As I’m writing this they have just discovered their reflection in the mirror and are not happy with the scary beasts that look back at them. Kipper is the devil on Penny’s left shoulder, tempting her to the dark side by stealing Dad’s slippers and encouraging her to join in as they proceed to rip it apart in the living room. Whereas, Penny is the angel on Kipper’s right shoulder, enticing him with good behaviour and tricks to get a tasty reward.

They love each other dearly but Kipper is at that naughty stage where everything is a toy, he is always bringing sticks in from the garden and eating things he shouldn’t eat. I am enrolling him in puppy classes mid October and it couldn’t come around quicker, I wonder how he will react to me being top dog. Fingers crossed.

Dog Grooming Maintenance

Dog Grooming MaintenanceIt is every groomers dream to have the perfect dog come in for their groom; a dog that leaps in the gate so excitedly, a dog that stands ever so still for you on the table, and leaves so happy and content with their new fur-do.

In many cases this is true, I have some lovely pooches who are always a joy to groom. However, on a rare occasion I will have a dog who can be very nervous, scared and who doesn’t like being groomed at all. A way around this predicament would be regular grooming sessions and gentle encouragement in a quiet and calm environment.

I always ensure that the dog has regular breaks throughout the groom to provide them with a chance to stretch their legs, have a drink and a wander in the garden. These intervals help the process of a nervous dog becoming more familiar and comfortable with their surroundings.

This is reinforced with regular grooming sessions so that the pooch is relaxed in its environment and is also why it is very important to book your beloved companions in for regular grooming, to avoid any negative traits forming.

Fleas and Ticks

Fleas and TicksI’ve recently been tasked to treating my dogs, Penny and Kipper, for their regular flea treatment.

Although it is easy enough to wrap a tablet up in tasty chicken to tempt it down their throats, it made me wonder about what would happen if I forgot to treat them and how much hassle that may cause me.

Fleas are the worst, not just for a groomer or vet, but also for an owner. These little pests are every pet owners worst nightmare, they are a nuisance and can cause a variety of skin and health problems for your furry friends.

Here are a few symptoms to look out for and the solutions if you find any of these symptoms.

Flea dirt (little black specs near the tail that turn purple in water) or noticing your dog is scratching a lot can be symptoms of your pet having fleas, so you will need to give your pooch their flea treatment; you can get this from your vets or a pet store (although the pet store ones are not as effective).

Once your dog has had the treatment you will need to treat your home too. This will include washing all your dogs bedding and blankets, and then using a flea bomb in your home, this will get rid of the existing fleas and eggs.

It is vital to keep up to date with flea, tick and worming treatment all year round even in the winter months to ensure you have a happy and healthy canine companion and a stress free home.
